The Whitsundays are located along Queensland’s central coast in north-eastern Australia, approximately 1,120km north of Brisbane and 630km south of Cairns. Collinsville, the Heart of The Whitsundays Outback, is approximately two hours drive from Airlie Beach via Bowen.
If you are travelling to Collinsville from overseas, fly into Brisbane, Cairns, Sydney, or Melbourne, and then book a domestic flight into one of the two airports in The Whitsundays. Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, offers the best range of connecting flights into the region.
The following two airports service The Whitsundays daily:
Whitsunday Coast Airport, Proserpine (PPP)
Whitsunday Coast Airport is located near Proserpine, approximately 25 minutes to Airlie Beach. The airport is currently serviced by domestic carriers Virgin Australia, Jetstar and QANTAS, offering daily flights from Brisbane and connecting flights from other cities. Car hire is available at the airport.
Great Barrier Reef Airport, Hamilton Island (HTI)
Located on Hamilton Island, the airport is serviced by Virgin Australia, Jetstar and QANTAS Link with daily flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne and connection points beyond. Cruise Whitsundays operates ferries from Hamilton Island to transfer passengers to Airlie Beach. Car hire is available from several locations in Airlie Beach Main Street.
The Bruce Highway is the major road linking Queensland’s coastal cities and towns. The Bruce Highway runs through Proserpine and Bowen, with Collinsville located approximately 1 hour’s drive off State Route 77 at Bowen.
Across the road from the Collinsville Coalface Museum, you’ll discover an excellent Visitor Information Centre.
The Information Centre, your one-stop-shop for information on all of the must-see attractions in Collinsville and the surrounding areas, is open 5 days a week:
Monday – Friday 8:00 – 17:00.
